NORTH VANCOUVER – An Ismaili candidate who is a veteran of the federal Liberal scene in Ottawa has narrowly defeated another Indo-Canadian candidate to take the nomination for North Vancouver into the next federal election.
Taleeb Noormohamed, 34, won the Liberal nomination race Saturday, edging out North Shore News sales manager Dee Dhaliwal approximately 460 votes to 430, according to unofficial tallies, reported North Shore News.
District of North Vancouver Coun. Roger Bassam came third in the race, with Kevin O’Brien, a former MLA in the Northwest Territories, a distant fourth.
Both Noormohamed’s and Dhaliwal’s camps signed up more than 500 new members prior to the vote on Saturday, swelling Liberal ranks in North Vancouver to about 1,400 from under 300 party members just a couple of months ago.
