Orlando/Lunaire
Music by G. F. Handel and Arnold Schoenberg
Reconceived by Patrick Eakin Young
Conducted by Ashiq Aziz
Orlando Lunaire is the third instalment in the Underground /Opera series of cutting-edge opera productions by Opera Erratica and the Classical Music Consort. This new piece radically combines the baroque opera Orlando by G.F. Handel with Arnold Schoenberg’s atonal twentieth-century masterpiece Pierrot Lunaire. Interweaving the two works, this original piece envisions the melancholic clown Pierrot in an urban underground, haunted by the memory of his lover and his rival. A site specific performance set in an industrial storage shed in Toronto’s West End, this underground cabaret opera combines baroque and modern music, video projections and avant-garde fashion in a totally unique opera experience.
