You can take them out of Arusha but you cannot take Arusha out. Former residents of this town who relocated elsewhere abroad reunited last week. More than 350 former residents made a historical convergence in Canada for their first in over 50 years.
Information made available to the Arusha Times indicates that the gathering in Canada lasted three days starting from Friday, July 30 and climaxed on Sunday evening of August 1, featuring a variety of activities.
The reunion was staged in Toronto area and had reportedly brought together many former Arusha residents who now live in Canada, the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, Germany and other parts of the world.
“This reunion is an opportunity to meet again, renew old friendships, make new ones, and cherish the fondest memories of those wonderful days in our earlier years,” said Mr Sultan Jessa, who is a retired journalist and the re-union event coordinator in a statement. Mr. Jessa is the founder-editor of The Northern News a forerunner of the Arusha Times.
The main event was a reunion night on July 30 at the Quality Inn on Ambler Drive in Mississauga, a gala banquet on the following day (Saturday) and barbecue and a winding-up picnick on Sunday, August 1 at the Bella Banquets on Jane Street in King City.
The former Arusha residents are mainly members of the Ismaili community. Ismailis are followers of His Highness the Aga Khan, who was recently granted honorary Canadian citizenship by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
