From Ameer Janmohamed
Most of you will probably have seen this historical photograph taken in 1952 at the time of the Evian Conference. You will also have seen the accompanying list of the 35 delegates. I knew 18 of them from personal acquaintance. I could not however identify the remaining 17 since the delegates were listed in accordance with their Jamati titles rather than in relation to where they were standing in the photograph.
With grateful help from correspondents from several countries, I have now been able to identify 33 out of the 35 delegates. You will see that I have created a virtual grid on the periphery of the photo. Horizontally numbers1-28 and letters A-H vertically.
I have examined the photograph carefully and to the best of my recollection, the person at D24 is Shariff Karsan, a prominent member of the Tanga Jamat.
This would mean that the person at E 15-16 is Rahemtulla K Shariff from Usambara Mountains near Tanga. The main town in the Usambara Mountains was Lushoto and it had a beautiful jamatkhana.
Ameer, it was a great pleasure to read your book ‘A Regal Romance’ which is largely set in Mombasa. Many of us from Tanga would visit Mombasa often and your book brought back many fond memories.
