Ismailimail 
I am very saddened to see the deterioration of the old Tanga Jamatkhana.
The old JK bears incredible memories and history for the Tanga Ismailis. The original building was a beautiful structure. It would be sad to see it disappear completely.

As an ismaili orignally from Tanga, I hope that the partial building of old Tanga Jamat Khana that remains today is restored. I last visited Tanga in 2005 and was saddened to see much of the degrading building demolished and only part of it remained. Tamim Amijee of The Tanga Heritage Center posted the situation on a website as an appeal to the ismailies to restore the partial building that remains today. I hope that this matter gets the attention of those whose mandate is to support such a cause and restore old Jamatkhanas. The Tanga old Jamat Khana is a historical site and habours wonderful memories for the older generation Tanga Ismailies. It warrants much support.

I was recently in Tanga and amazed to find wonderfully preserved relics of previous generation.Tanga is where my heart is I hope to settle there and welcome any thougts from former residents.

I am the daughter of Bahadur Samji Babul and niece of Fatheli Samji Babul. Am youger sister of Tasnim and Shenaz Babul. I share the same sentiments about Tanga. My heart lies in Tanga too, I left Tanga in 1978 and have visited twice in last 6 years. I can’t shake the feeling of wanting to go back for more visits. I live in Vancouver and so flying over to Tanzania takes 1- 2 days unfortunately.
Do you still have relatives living in Tanga?

Tamim Amijee might be interested in helping to save the old jamat khana but, ultimately, the job of deciding what happens to it is in the hands of the ‘huzoor department’ in Nairobi. Find out what happened to the Lamu Jamat Khana and see how things go. We do not really get the details of the transactions, though. Can you? Here are some links to take off. I also once wrote an article about Kilulu Estate in Urithi, when it was a much younger magazine. Tamim, however, is very interested in restoration.

Happy to report a complete transformation of the “Old” Ismaili Jamatkhana in Tanga.
Built in the 1930s, on India Street, in the town centre – it was regrettably left in a rather dilapidated state, yesrs after the new JK was opened in the Usagara Area, on the 9th August 1963.
Seems to have been restored, both with the interiors and the exteriors. And refurbished remarkably well; albeit with only half of the original structure.
