Ismaili Volunteers at their Best: Personal narrative by Nizar Ali K. Shivji

Canada gave us everything, dignity, pride, and a better life which we were not able to anticipate.

In his speech to Vancouver Legislative on Thursday, February 11, 2010 Prime Minister Stephen Harper very eloquently said, ” B. C.’s unmatched beauty and its promise of a better life has never lost its power to enchant and the enthrall,”.

Today, the exciting time of Vancouver 2010 is upon us, and we have participated for a meaningful way to get involved and contribute to the success of B.C. Olympics 2010.

Our Olympics medal is VANOC’s accreditation which says – “The ISMAILI VOLUNTEERS, ISMAILI COUNCIL FOR BC”, issued under the auspices of OCOG. It is our pride and joy that we are identified as Ismaili host, giving us the opportunity to welcome the world to Vancouver.

We have become the very visible venue team at Vancouver City Centre Station (Canada Line), enjoying the role of an Olympic ambassador welcoming people and providing information and direction, and most of all offering them our BC hospitality. This has given us a fantastic opportunity to build new relationships and serve our community while feeling a strong sense of pride and belonging!

On Wednesday, February 10, 2010, I was at Lynn Valley Centre Mall (North Vancouver) to celebrate the Olympics Flame’s visit to the District of North Vancouver at the official mid-celebration. Premier Gordon Campbell and civic leaders were also present, and we received excellent opportunity to greet the Premier Gordon Campbell.

With my very best regards, Nizar Shivji, Vancouver BC

  1. The Ismaili Volunteers are doing a fantastic job at the Olympics! Its great to see them at Granville St. in front of the Pacific Centre.

You can’t miss their wide smiles, and their proudly worn green jackets with the smartly embroidered words “Ismaili Volunteer”.
