Ishtiaq Berche and his wife, Toni, lead an extraordinarily ordinary life.
Berche is a medical physicist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Toni Campbell Berche was a professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College before she became a stay-at-home mom to 14-month-old Liam.
But to the filmmakers of “Different Books, Common Word: Baptists and Muslims,” the Berches were an example of how bonds can be formed between different faiths — specifically, between Muslims and Southern Baptists.
Born in Hunza, Pakistan, Ishtiaq is an Ismaili Muslim and Toni, a Horn Lake native, is Southern Baptist. Their son had both a traditional Muslim and a Christian dedication service. He’s learning to speak both English and his father’s native tongue, Burushaski.
