Premier Ed Stelmach handed out the hardware and the accolades at the event sponsored by the hotel and IBM. “The 16 kids who received awards today are real leaders,” the premier said following the event. “Many have overcome some personal health issues and have helped out so many in their own community, setting aside their own personal needs.”

Children and Youth Services minister Janis Tarchuk told the kids they have made Alberta proud.

“You inspire hope in your community,” she said in a speech to the kids and their families. “You really are outstanding role models and not just for other kids–for all of us.”

The other Edmonton area award recipients were Venessa Letwin, Shayne Baumgartner, Dominique Baptiste, Kaitlyn Buss, and Ted Andrew. Also receiving awards were Cassidy Goodswimmer of Valleyview, Miranda Tilley of Rainbow Lake, Olivia Hall of Stettler, Ted Andrew of Youngstown, Fatima Bata and Zafir Nagji of Calgary, Samantha Terry of Taber, Danielle Heinen of Picture Butte and Gabrielle Kirk of Fort Macleod.
