River of Words is an international art and poetry project founded in 1995. Each year, in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words conducts an international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover.
The year 2009 award saw 8 year old Tarannum Lakdawala, grade 2 student as a Georgia state winner for her creative poetry “The Sight of the OkeFenokee”. Her poetry was published in 2009 Georgia River of Words book. Her poetry is currently showcased for one year in the Georgia River of Words exhibit. The exhibit travels to libraries, schools, nature centre, conferences, water festivals, parks and state buildings.
The Sight of the Okefenokee
The Okefenokee, what an ancient place to be,
The place for animals to live and grow,
Oh, what a colorful sight it is,
Dark and bright colors of the animals and plants
And frogs bounce around in the tall grass.
Oh, how clean the water of the swamp is,
All the peat makes it healthy and gives it color,
The watershed is working day and night to do
its job,
To clean the water!
