Use your head for cycle safety – Helmet can prevent serious harm, even on short jaunts

–snip–

While research shows proper use of a bike helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by 88 per cent, one survey, conducted by the Canadian Safety Council, showed that more than one half (52 per cent) of Canadian adult cyclists never or rarely wear a helmet. Given the fragility of the skull, it’s the kind of stat that just doesn’t make sense to Shelina Babul-Wellar, associate director of the B.C. Injury Research and Prevention Unit.

“If you think of your skull being the thickness of three pennies . . . if you fall off your bike and hit your head on the cement, there is a high probability that you are going to suffer a severe head injury,” she says. “Would you rather have your hair messed up or be in a hospital bed for the rest of your life?”
