Vice President of Uganda applauds Aga Khan

Bukenya applauds Aga Khan – Andrew Pacutho/Monitor – Kampala

The government has once again commended the efforts of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in various sectors of Uganda’s economy.

The Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, made these remarks on behalf of the president at a ceremony to celebrate the Imamat Day in Kampala last week. Imamat Day marks the anniversary of the day His Highness succeeded his grandfather Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah to the office of Imam of the Ismaili Muslims. The Aga Khan has been Uganda’s development partner since the 1930s.

Prof. Bukenya said the aid provided by the Aga Khan is unlike any other in the world because he “does not give fish but teaches one to fish.”

Some of the AKDN projects in the country are the $869 million Bujagali Hydro Electricity project, the West Nile Rural Electrification Company, a $50 million Academy of Excellence in Munyoyo and various initiatives in the education sector like the Aga Khan University, secondary and primary schools, Air Uganda, Diamond Trust Bank among others.

The resident representative of the Aga Khan, Mr Mahmood Ahmed, announced that a new Serena Hotel would be opening on the Entebbe Kampala highway in September.
