High adventure: crossing Tajikistan | Seattle Times

high adventure - crossing tajikistanBy Tiffany Kary Sunday, May 10, 2009

Tajikistan, the poorest of Central Asia’s post-Soviet republics, is surprisingly safe, despite sharing a border with Afghanistan and suffering a 2007 bombing attributed to Islamic terrorists.

To reach the Pamir region in eastern Tajikistan, we caught the Dushanbe-Khorog flight, infamous for a tight passage between peaks that prevents it from flying in anything but cloudless skies. Some of the world’s tallest mountains are in the Pamir range, including the 24,590-foot Ismoil Somoni peak, in what’s called the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.

While the rest of Tajikistan is Sunni, in Pamir the Ismaili Shiites — many of whom are blue-eyed blonds who claim descent from Alexander the Great — revere the Aga Khan, spiritual leader to a branch of the Shia faith, hanging photos of him in every room. In Khorog, the region’s capital, the luxurious Serena Inn, owned by an Aga Khan company, was hosting a music festival. Teenagers in jeans and trendy T-shirts danced and snapped photos of a Dushanbe rock group on their cellphones.

  1. Khorog is a place where ismaili jamaat is living peacefully. Its an isolated from all the world place because of its high mountains where people live in. Hazar Imam, the Aga Khan is the Noor of that place and the light of its heart.
Hospitality is what anyone would meet coming to Khorog or Pamirs (it also known as Pamirs because of its highest mountains). Music, art culture and love is everywhere…Everyone would want you to visit their house, everyone would be interested to know about you and to learn about them. They are very hard working community that for many years with His Highness the Aga Khan, established their education. They are smart in their work, family and decision making as well as in their education and career. They are thirst for opportunity. One thing you would notice is THEY NEVER COMPETE for money or wealth but they DO compete for education, because they were sick for knowledge for so many years. They would give you all they have if you bring education into their community. Their answers to questions touches hearts, wides eyes, turn on a long breath. Their kindness is unimaginable because you would think that there can’t be any heaven than this place. Their love to nature, as a creation of God is high and thus their houses is always surrounded by the green grass or flowers. They would share with you even a little piece of bread leaving themselves hungry, because the LIGHT of their heart would always flash a light to any heart.

  2. hi,
to the author of that article:
Mr. Tiffany please keep in mind that there is no such phrase like islamic terrorism as you mentioned
in the first paragraph. Not only Islam, but all of the world religions don’t preach terrorism. If you knew what is you wouldn’t say that. special for worse-informed people:
    ISLAM is all about PEACE
    Terrorism it doesn’t teach
It’s all about love and family and charity
    And parying to one God.
    This is ISLAM
