About 200 people gathered in north Edmonton on Sunday to celebrate the birth of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.
“It is a significant event, not only in Islamic history but in human history,” said Ibrahim Abu-Rabi, the keynote speaker for the event at the Edmonton Islamic Academy.

Mohib Samnani, speaking for the Ismaili Council for Edmonton, said Canadian Muslims are fortunate to live in a society that embraces diversity. Nashir Karmali agreed, saying events like these give him hope other countries will look to Canada as a model of how to become more open.
Karmali just returned from a year in Afghanistan, where he was working for the aid organization Focus Humanitarian Assistance.
