Breaking out of the preteen stereotype – Series, fest focus on kids making a difference

It doesn’t take much to push Bilaal Rajan into serious motivational mode.
In a brief, 20-minute chat from his Toronto-area home, the startlingly well-spoken 12-year-old intelligently negotiates a number of topics: AIDS in Africa, public speaking, authoring a book, the media and his own future plans to become what could be Canada’s first Harvard-trained, economist-neurosurgeon-astronaut.
And when asked if he had anything about the fundraising efforts chronicled in episodes of CBC’s Breakout!, he launches into a spiel that sounds like a sound-bite-ready mantra.
“The most important factor is to take action,” says Bilaal. “Don’t do it next year, don’t do it next month, or next week, or even tomorrow. Do it today.”
