Not many of us would think of moving to Syria, so what set this intrepid writer on the road to Damascus?

Today, property in Damascus is on a roll due to wealthy Iraqi refugees and Gulf money, a huge increase in tourism and belated official recognition of the value and beauty of old houses. There is also considerable investment from the philanthropical Aga Khan Fund, which finances the restoration of historical structures throughout the Islamic world.

One project just signed off is only a few doors from Darke’s house: Beit Nizam, a magnificent Ottoman palace enclosing two interconnecting courtyards. With two other grand houses in the old city, it is destined to become a five-star hotel.
