KABUL (PAN): The Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan and India, Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta and Mr. Pranab Mukherjee jointly launched the restoration of the historic Star Palace located within the precincts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The restoration work is being carried out in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), whose staff is in the process of surveying and documenting the Palace, drawing on preliminary work carried out by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) of the Government of India. Plans, sections and elevations of the existing condition of the Palace are expected to be ready by end-January, and a more detailed technical condition assessment by AKTC will be complete by end-February.

This will enable the joint formulation of architectural proposals, following which a programme of conservation and rehabilitation of the Palace will be executed by CPWD. This work is expected to take a year. The Indian Government has committed $2 million for the restoration of this historic building.
