The Kyrgyz venture Yurt Kindergartens has been selected as a finalist in World Challenge 08, the worldwide competition that rewards projects and small businesses that have shown enterprise and innovation, the BBC World News Press Office reported.
Now Yurt-based kindergartens are adapting to the traditions of the people, giving the chance of an education to children who otherwise would have missed out. Today, only 10 percent of children in Kyrgyzstan receive pre-school education. A problem made worse by the tradition of the Kyrgyz herders, who spend up to five months a year in the ‘jailoo’, or summer pastures, making continued education difficult.
A review by the Aga Khan Foundation found that children who have participated in these programmes outperform others in both reading and mathematics.
The winner will receive a US$20,000 grant from Shell (a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies), while two runners up will each receive US$10,000 to help develop their initiative.
Good thing,useful.
