Exhibition – Bridges that Unite – opens in Vancouver

Exhibition opens in Vancouver – Traveling exhibition invites Canadians to explore our nation’s ability to build bridges for global development

An interactive exhibition showcasing Canada’s ability to bridge the developed and the developing worlds will open its doors Wednesday in Vancouver. Bridges that Unite, running June 11 – 22 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, invites visitors to consider Canada’s role in the world through the lens of a remarkable 25-year partnership with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in some of the world’s most isolated and impoverished regions.

Covering 4,500 sq. ft., Bridges that Unite offers a vibrant space in which to explore some of the most pressing questions of the 21st Century. Thought-provoking stories, spanning several continents, are told through powerful images, evocative soundscapes and interactive, multimedia components.

Admission is free.

The exhibition also introduces 11 Canadian Agents of Change — individuals, from all walks of life, who are part of the bridge of people transforming thinking about how to address today’s global challenges.

Khalil Z. Shariff, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), an agency of the AKDN, explained Bridges that Unite is an opportunity to share the experience of the past 25 years and chart a way forward for Canada and the world.

“Canada at its best has had a real impact in a way that is sensitive, thoughtful and sustained,” said Mr. Shariff. “For example, we’ve learned that social change begins when communities take the lead in their own development efforts — that a hand up is more helpful than a hand-out,” he said. “The exhibition draws on our rich experience in the developing world to spark a conversation about what Canada and Canadians can do to ensure a more peaceful, prosperous and pluralist world.”

Anyone with an interest in Canada’s role in the world, from school groups to professional associations, will find the exhibition a compelling resource for education and discussion.
