Walk, run, stroll to fight poverty

Children are walking, running and riding in strollers Friday to raise money for developing countries and you can join them.

The Macklin House Daycare Centre holds its eighth annual world partnership mini walk to help fight poverty and build schools and health clinics.

Last year they raised $4,500, well over the $1,500 goal. Organizers are staying conservative this year, aiming for $2,500.
“Whatever participants collect in pledges, the daycare matches it, then the Aga Khan Development Network matches one hundred per cent of that,” walk director Shahina Lalani said.

The daycare has been helping children understand poverty through daily activities. “We handed out Smarties. Some groups got 20, others got two,” Ms Lalani said. “The kids would look at each other upset and confused, than we would talk about it.”

This year, 110 children from six months to 12 years and 25 adults will take part in the 15-to-20-minute walk, which starts at 10:30 a.m. at the centre, 2501 Denison Rd. off McCowan Road.
