For his involvement with the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 11-year-old Ishan Mandani of Dunedin received a Youth Activism Award in January from the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, D.C.
Ishan has shared his time and savings with hospice patients, the seniors program of “Friend to Friend” at Mease Dunedin Hospital, and has pledged to collect $5,000 toward disaster relief to help the Tampa Bay chapter of the American Red Cross. His efforts have earned him the Presidential Service Award two years in a row for volunteering more than 100 hours in various non-profit institutions.
Ishan, who has been to Europe, Africa and the Middle East, has been invited to join People to People Leadership Ambassador Program to Australia, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands this summer.
He is a sixth grade student at Safety Harbor Middle School and is a member of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim Community.
He is the son of Nuruddin and Nisha Mandani of Dunedin, formerly of India, and the brother of Irfan Mandani, a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
