Pakistan: 1 in 5 of our elders suffer from depression

Women twice as likely to be hit with depression than men

KARACHI: It was found in a study conducted on 400 elderly people that 19.5 percent of the elderly suffer from depression. Elderly living in a nuclear family system were found to be 4.3 times more likely to suffer from depression than those living in a joint family system, the study found.

The study that appeared in ‘BMC Psychiatry’ was conducted last year by Ather M Taqui, Ahmed Itrat, Waris Qidwai and Zeeshan Qadri at the Aga Khan University Hospital and various connections between the elderly and depression were studied.
