Free Primary Education Benefit The Children of Coast Province
Coastweek- – Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E Ross Hynes, will visit education projects supported by the Canadian Government on Friday 26 October 2007.
The High Commissioner is expected to visit Mwijabu Primary school to experience first hand how free primary education has benefited children of the Coast province.
Since the introduction of Free Primary Education in Kenya in 2003, Canada has provided the Kenyan education sector with KSH 1.7 billion (C$ 27.7 million) in support, specifically to buy instructional materials for all public primary schools in Kenya.
In addition Canada has provided the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada with Kshs 240 Million (C$3.8 million) for the development and implementation of the Kenya School Improvement Project (KENSIP) since its inception in 2002.
The goal of KENSIP is to make quality primary education more accessible to all children in Kenya, with an emphasis on girls.
Specifically, its purpose is to improve classroom instruction and learning, strengthen school management and enhance gender equality deprived schools in Mombasa and Kwale target areas.
The project takes a holistic approach to improving education by focusing on the community and local educational system, and other components that make up the school system.
KENSIP is building up educational and managerial capacity at targeted schools through mentoring, child-centered activity-based teaching and learning methodology
