Take a walk & help Ismailis help kids

Local children will be among those helped by an event next month put on by the Lower Mainland’s Ismaili Muslim community and the United Way.

The 2007 Ismaili Walk for Kids, set for Sunday, Sept. 9 in Stanley Park, will raise funds – the target is $1 million – for United Way Success by 6 programs that strengthen services for young children and families.

In the Tri-Cities, United Way Success by 6 allocations include $25,000 to Share Family and Community Services. The funding supports Share’s partnership with Millside Family Resource Centre and the Seaview community school to develop sustainable programs and activities aimed at increasing children’s school readiness and build on the community’s capacity to support early childhood development and skill development for children and families.

The 2007 Ismaili Walk for Kids takes place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 9 at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. This year’s event features a 7 km walk, a 3.5- m children’s walk and a family festival complete with prizes, an auction and music.

Walk participants who collect pledges are eligible for prizes. Registered teams have a chance to win an indoor kart racing package from TBC Indoor Racing and Event Centre. You can register at http://www.iwalkforkids.ca.

The walk was founded in 1991 by the Ismaili Muslim Community of B.C. and benefits a local non-profit organization. This is the fifth consecutive year that proceeds will go to help dozens of United Way Success by 6 programs.
