Abida Parveen to speak on spiritualism at the Aga Khan University Auditorium

KARACHI: Long-known as the heir to the throne of the late Qawwali legend, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pakistani singer Abida Parveen will speak on Spiritualism at 4:00 p.m. February 14, at the Aga Khan University (AKU) Auditorium. The lecture is part of the AKU Special Lecture Series. Born in Larkana in 1954, Parveen received her musical training initially from her father, Ghulam Haider, and subsequently from the great exponent of the classical genre, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. She embarked on her professional career from Radio Pakistan, Hyderabad, in 1973. Her first hit was the Sindhi song “Tuhinje zulfan jay band kamand widha.” Though Parveen is associated most closely with the verses of the Sufi master, Shah Abdul Latif, she has also sung the verses of other Sufis, including Amir Khusro, Bulleh Shah, Sachal Sarmast, Sultan Bahu, and other such as Kabir and Waris Shah. Parveen has received many prestigious music awards for her singing, and is often invited to music festivals in India and abroad, regularly touring the Middle East, Europe, UK and USA. ppi
