Progressive Architecture Awards
This year’s P/A Awards jury gave out four awards and four citations, emphasizing designs which progress beyond form to function, serving the life of a community. The work of two Aga Khan affiliates was recognized in this award cycle: Aziza Chaouni, Aga Khan Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, was awarded for her research project on the marginal spaces of the Fez medina, Hybrid Urban Sutures: Filling in the Gaps in the Medina of Fez, Morocco. Hashim Sarkis, Aga Khan Professor of Landscape and Urbanism in Muslim Societies at the Harvard GSD, was cited for his Bab Tebbaneh School for Working Children and for Women in Tripoli, Lebanon.
Other awards went to Marc Boutin Architect for the Calgary Center for Global Community, Michael Maltan Architects for a California single-family home in the tradition of the Case Study houses, and office dA for their Villa Moda sports club on the outskirts of Kuwait City.
Studio Luz Architects, Hariri Pontarini Architects, and the University of Arkansas Community Design Center all received citations for their projects: a Haiti orphanage built for sustainability and community, a structurally innovative Baha’i temple in Chile, and an interaction-focused retirement center in Arkansas.
