8,000 students granted UK visas in 2006
KARACHI: More than 8,000 UK student visas were issued to Pakistanis in 2006, a five-fold increase compared to previous years, British Deputy High Commissioner, Hamish Daniel, said Saturday at the inaugural session of the Eighth Sheffield International Conference on Diagnostic Imaging at the Aga Khan University (AKU).
Daniel said that over 50 representatives from different UK-based educational institutions visited Pakistan in 2006 and received a tremendous response. Appreciating the participation of UK-based medical experts at the conference, Daniel hoped that it would lead to interesting and stimulating deliberations, sharing of knowledge, skills and experience, and ultimately enhance intellectual capacities and groom manpower.
He said that approximately 800,000 British nationals were of Pakistani origin. Daniel appreciated the fact that people from Poland in the UK during the last five years (since the formation of the European Union), along with Indo-Pakistanis and other South Asians, were playing a role by enriching their country of choice.
Earlier, Prof S. K. Marcos, who is a consultant radiologist at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital, said that 20 professionals, including radiologists, consultant physicians and surgeons from the UK and Holland were attending the conference along with their Pakistani counterparts.
