FROM TSAVO POWER ‘HEALTH DAY’

Coastweek – – 1,800 people in Kwale District benefited from a Health
Action Day funded by Tsavo Power Company and organized by the Aga Khan
Health Services in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The day featured free bilharzia, malaria, anemia, pneumonia and
urinary tract and eye infections screening and treatment programme.
Other free medical services provided were maternal and child health
clinics and immunization for children and expectant mothers.
Health educators explained nutrition and prevention of malaria and HIV
Aids. Health Action Days at the Coast have been backed by the Tsavo
Power Company under an annual 55,000 dollar community relations
programme to improve education and health for the local communities in
the vicinity of the power plant and neighbouring areas.
The Tsavo Power Company feeds 74 MW to the National Grid and started
operation in 2001. Industrial Promotion Services (Kenya) Limited
(IPS), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development
(AKFED) and Cinergy Global Power Inc of the United States are the
biggest stakeholders in Tsavo Power Company through a joint venture
with a holding of 49.9 per cent.
Michael Fox, the Chief Executive Officer of Tsavo Power, explained:
“The Health Action Days supplement the services provided by
dispensaries and alleviate the hardship of the majority of people in
the rural areas in the vicinity of Mombasa.
“Apart from the provision of free basic treatment, the clinics have
been helping to educate people to avoid prevalent diseases like
bilharzia and malaria and great emphasis is placed on HIV awareness.
“In May this year, Tsavo Power and the Aga Khan Health Service held a
special Health Action Day in Garissa District.
“A total of 1,126 people were provided with free medical check ups and
treatment.
“In addition Tsavo Power through its Social Responsibility Programme,
has been supporting other charity organizations which include the
Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya, Cerebral Palsy
Society of Kenya, the Sickle Cell Foundation of Kenya, Flying Doctors
Society of Kenya and the SOS Children’s Village in Mombasa.”
