Kabul, November 13th, 2006: Afghanistan’s leading cellular operator
Roshan celebrated its recent achievement of reaching one million
subscribers milestone, by winning the prestigious Best Operator in
Developing Market Award at the 8th World Communications Awards 2006,
held recently in London, U.K. The World Communication Awards recognize
companies and individuals responsible for the innovations,
achievements and great new services that are helping to build
tomorrow’s industry. The Awards are open to all communications
providers, whether they are traditional carrier, service provider,
multimedia content provider or another organization providing a
communication service.
Roshan was short-listed for an award in several categories, namely,
Best Brand, Best Mobile Operator and Best National/Regional Operator.
This in itself was a singular achievement and by winning the award for
the Best Operator in Developing Market, Roshan has now achieved
recognition globally, placing Afghanistan onto the world stage.
Speaking about winning the award Karim Khoja, the CEO of Roshan
stated: “The real success of any company is to win independent
recognition and when the recognition comes at a world level, it is a
clear proof of the company’s high performance. While we are very happy
and proud to win this award, we are determined to do even better in
the future, as the leading cellular company in Afghanistan.”
Roshan was the only company not in the entire region to win this award
– one of the most revered in the global communications industry. The
World Communications Awards 2006 Best Operator in Developing Market
Award is the third major international award won by Roshan in its
short history of a little over 3 years of operations. Earlier in 2005
Roshan won the Best Marketing Campaign Award at the 10th Annual World
GSM Congress, held in Cannes, France and in September this year Roshan
won the Telecoms Brand of the Year Award in the inaugural CommsMEA
Awards held in Dubai.
“The Best Operator in Developing Market Award is the result of Roshan
conducting its business from the very start with one clear objective –
to be the highest quality, most trusted cellular operator in
Afghanistan that places customer satisfaction at the very top of its
priority list,” said Altaf Ladak, Chief Marketing Officer of Roshan.
“The award is thus a victory not only for Roshan but for the people of
Afghanistan without whose support this would not have been possible,”
he added.
Today, Roshan (Telecom Development Company Afghanistan Ltd) is
Afghanistan’s leading cellular telephone service provider, with a
countrywide network of 150 cities and towns. Roshan directly employs
some 800 people and provides indirect employment to hundreds of
others. Roshan has invested over US$ 220 million in Afghanistan and is
the country’s single largest tax payer contributing approximately 6
percent of the Afghan Government’s overall revenue. Roshan enacts a
comprehensive corporate social responsibility programme and is deeply
committed to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and socio-economic development.
