Every October, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon unites runners from more than 100 countries, transforming the streets of Chicago into a vibrant celebration of endurance, diversity, and global connection. Beyond being one of the seven prestigious World Marathon Majors, the event stands as a testament to how sport transcends borders — fostering cultural exchange and strengthening international bonds.

In 2024, the marathon contributed over $547 million to Chicago’s economy, reflecting its profound impact beyond athletics. It serves as a living example of sports diplomacy — connecting communities, driving economic growth, and celebrating the shared human spirit of perseverance.

This year, the event carried an especially meaningful note. His Highness the Aga Khan V, known globally for his visionary leadership and humanitarian commitment, celebrated his birthday on Sunday, October 12, 2025, by completing the 26.2-mile (42.2 km) Chicago Marathon in just under five hours.

His Highness’s participation inspired many, particularly within the global Ismaili community, who also took part in the race. He expressed joy at seeing members of the community among the participants and conveyed his “warm congratulations and appreciation” to all those who supported him along the route.

In recent guidance to the Jamat, His Highness has emphasized the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle. “Make some time to move every day and play sports when you can,” he advised during an audience in Nairobi, Kenya. “Whatever your age, and however busy you are, everyone can make an effort to move more. This will be good for your physical and your mental health.”

True to his own counsel, His Highness regularly engages in physical activity. Alongside his many responsibilities, he enjoys surfing and long-distance running — having also completed the Berlin Marathon in 2024.

The Chicago Marathon, established in 1977, has become a cornerstone event in the world of athletics. Its scenic course begins in Grant Park, winds through the city’s North, West, and South Sides, and returns downtown along the shores of Lake Michigan. With more than 12,000 volunteers assisting participants and over 50,000 runners taking part, the marathon is a vivid example of community spirit in motion.

Last year, the event raised a record-breaking $30 million for over 200 nonprofit organizations, underscoring its role not only as a sporting spectacle but also as a powerful force for good.

From elite athletes to recreational runners, the marathon remains a symbol of human connection — where personal triumphs, shared effort, and global unity converge on the same road. In that spirit, His Highness the Aga Khan V’s participation serves as a powerful reminder: through sport, we build bridges, celebrate resilience, and reaffirm the shared humanity that unites us all.
