The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) has unveiled the first episode of its multilingual series, Assassins: Beyond the Legend, exploring the historical and cultural origins of the so-called Assassin legends. Titled The Origins, this episode features a compelling conversation between Dr. Farhad Daftary, former Co-Director of the IIS, and Dr. Daryoush Mohammad Poor, offering fresh insights into the reality of Medieval Ismailis, far removed from the myths popularized over centuries.
The Western fascination with assassins, while often dramatized, has at times evolved into valuable historical inquiry. Scholars like Marshall Hodgson, Wladimir Ivanow, and Bernard Lewis have laid the groundwork for understanding these legends. IIS has contributed significantly to this effort with pivotal works such as Assassin Legends by Dr. Daftary and Eagle’s Nest by Peter Willey. Additional references include Shayesteh Ghofrani’s Ismailis in Iran, Miklós Sárközy’s The Early Nizari Ismailis and their Neighbouring Powers, and the Encounters in Muslim History module from the Secondary Curriculum.
The relevance of the Assassin legends has experienced a modern revival through digital media, with the Assassin’s Creed video game franchise and TV series such as Awakening: The Great Seljuk, Saladin: Conqueror of Jerusalem, and The Assassins. In response, IIS’s new series aims to engage audiences with historically grounded perspectives, offering an educational counterbalance to popular entertainment.
By delving into the historical realities behind the myths, Assassins: Beyond the Legend serves as an essential resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Nizari Ismaili community and their rich, multifaceted history. Watch Episode 1, The Origins, for a thought-provoking journey into the past.
