On March 17, 2025, His Highness the Aga Khan V, in his first public engagement as the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Chair of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), pledged €100 million over two years at the European Commission’s conference, “Standing with Syria,” to support Syria’s humanitarian and development needs. Highlighting priorities like food security, healthcare, education, renewable energy, and cultural preservation, he emphasized the need for peace and inclusive governance. The AKDN, with a strong legacy in Syria, continues its partnership with global entities to aid in addressing the nation’s protracted crisis, which has left 80% of Syrians in poverty and millions without basic necessities.
