By: Katherine Marshall – February 25, 2025

The late His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, played a pivotal role in advancing interreligious cooperation and its integration with human development. Katherine Marshall, Director of the World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD), reflects on the partnership between the Aga Khan and James D. Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank, which laid the groundwork for the WFDD initiative. The partnership aimed to bridge the gap between faith communities and international development, tackling issues like poverty, health, and education.
Despite initial skepticism and challenges, the Aga Khan’s wisdom, meticulous attention, and financial support shaped the initiative’s foundations. His efforts included supporting seminars at Harvard University and focusing on sensitive, country-level religious engagement. While the Aga Khan eventually stepped back from active involvement in WFDD, his vision for strategic collaboration among faiths and his insights into education and development remain integral to his enduring legacy.
