Salim Fakirani has been named the chair of the Board of Ottawa Police Services Board, and city Coun. Marty Carr has been named vice-chair. Fakirani, a provincial appointee to the board and lawyer for the federal government with a background in international affairs and human rights, has held the role of acting chair of the board since [December 2023]. He was nominated to officially take the reins as board chair by city Coun. Cathy Curry, which was seconded by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. The mayor nominated Carr for the vice-chair position, which was seconded by Fakirani.

Speaking to reporters after the nominations, Ottawa Police Service Chief Eric Stubbs said he was looking forward to working with Fakirani and Carr. “They’re very diligent and ask a lot of questions,” he said. “That’s important.”
The city is also currently seeking a citizen appointee to its board following Beck’s resignation. The city extended its deadline for applications until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and residents of Ottawa, and they must not be employed by the city.
The police oversight board includes city councillors and appointees by both Ottawa city council and the provincial government. Council members and citizens are appointed for the duration of council’s term, the police board website says, while provincial appointees serve three-year terms.
The police board has been led by a number of different chairs in recent years. In spring 2022, city council voted to remove previous chair Diane Deans from the board after she hired Matt Torigian, former chief of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, as interim chief of the Ottawa Police Service without a job competition following Peter Sloly’s resignation during the 2022 convoy protest. Two other city councillors then resigned from the board in protest. Vacancies were filled and former board chair Eli El-Chantiry was appointed interim chair, serving until his term as councillor ended in fall 2022. Beck took the reins in April 2023 and held the position for approximately seven months.

Re: Fakarani Family.
As a 10 year old child, My first memory of the Fakarani family is of a n outstanding cricket batsman who visited our town of Mbale on each Sunday. My guess is that the cricketer was either a parent or an uncle of the Fakarani brothers in Canada who are most generous with their resourses.
Thank you Fakarani Family for making us Ex-Ugandans proud.
Bless you.
