The Legislative Council was the only representative body of the Bombay Presidency for most of British Rule. It was only after 1936 that a Legislative Assembly was set up in the province which acted as the ‘Lower House’ and subsequently the Council became the ‘Upper House’ or Senate.
Prominent community representation at the Legislative Council over the decades included the Currimbhoy Family (Sir Ebrahim, Sir Fazalbhoy, Gulamhussain, Rahimtoola, Mohammedbhoy), Rahimtoola Family (Sir Ibrahim, Jaffer, Hoosenally, Sir Fazal), Chinoy Family (Fazalbhoy, Sir Rahimtoola, Sir Sultan, NoorMuhammad), Laljee Family (Hoosenbhoy, Jaffer), Rahimtulla Sayani, Mohammed Ali Jinnah and more.
