Gilgit Serena Hotel Celebrates World Tourism Day 2017: Sustainable Tourism – A Tool for Development

Celebrated worldwide since 1980, World Tourism Day 2017 was commemorated on 27 September.

This year, the theme is to advocate the potential of sustainable tourism as a tool for development. To commemorate the day, Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s Gilgit Serena Hotel organized a training session for students from various educational institutes, to train the values of contributing in responsible Tourism and how to protect the environment, land and culture.

“Serena Green Team” cleaned surroundings of Jutial and Gilgit City Park, raised awareness of the importance of cleanliness by talking to the people and informing them about the health hazards posed by garbage dumps and open drains. Cloth bags were distributed to the shoppers in bazars, especially fruit and vegetable shops, providing awareness, that they should not be taking groceries in plastic bags.
