Using a tool similar to a label maker, Zoya Surani punched a single letter at a time to translate a children’s book into braille.
Translating iConquer: Ubuntu’s 31-page book “Chews Wisely” takes the 17-year-old Veterans Memorial High School senior about six hours.
iConquer, a nonprofit program under the It’s Your Life Foundation, is dedicated to educating young children about healthy eating habits and exercising. The program utilizes animated films and picture books to explain healthy eating and exercising to children ages 3 to 7.
Zoya became inspired to create the book, which is based on the movie of the same title, from her older sister Saherish Surani, Zoya Surani said.
When Saherish Surani began to lose her hearing last summer, Zoya felt the need to help those who she felt were underserved in the community.
