The top echelons of Alberta’s health system received a jolt Thursday when it was revealed that deputy health minister Carl Amrhein is stepping down.
Amrhein’s last day in the role will be Oct. 6, after which he will become the provost and vice-president academic of Aga Khan University, the government said.
“As deputy minister, Dr. Amrhein has helped advance initiatives in primary care, mental health, physician compensation, and clinical information systems,” a statement said.

Dr. Amrhein holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Pennsylvania State University (1978) and a Ph.D. in Geography from State University of New York at Buffalo (1984) with research interest in economic geography, labour markets, decision theory, migration, and quantitative methods.
Dr. Amrhein currently is a member of Fulbright Canada: Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America; and a Fellow, Royal Canadian Geographic Society.
