Performances begin this September
Toronto, August 31, 2016 — The Aga Khan Museum’s 2016 Performing Arts season kicks off this September with a focus on the sights and sounds of international music traditions. Until December 2016, more than 10 different showcase performances of music and dance, one live theatrical performance, and three films — along with a three-day flamenco festival — celebrate the artistry and talent of artists from such countries as India, Italy, Spain, and Syria.
“This fall brings many new and some returning faces to the Aga Khan Museum,” says Amirali Alibhai, Head of Performing Arts. “The Álvaro Siza: Gateway to the Alhambra is the perfect context for the second iteration of our flamenco festival, featuring some of the most talented emerging and established artists from Spain. Our thematic focus on Syria offers us a chance to work with the Syria Film Festival to screen films such as 50 Feet From Syria (2015), and to work with artists like Lubana Al Quntar, who will be performing both western opera and Syrian maqams in the same evening.”
2016 season highlights include:
- Classical Music Series (September 24, September 25, October 29, December 3, December 10): Featured artists include sitartist Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee and vocalist Warren Senders. September performances presented in partnership with Raag Mala Toronto.
- Duende: Flamenco Festival (October 14, 15, 16): Featured artists include guitarist Pablo Giménez and dancer Sara Jiménez Andrés.
- World Music Series (October 1 and October 6): Featured artists include Radik Tyulyush of Huun Huur Tu, and the Turkey-based Taksim Trio.
In addition to programming hosted in the Museum’s stunning 350-seat auditorium, guests can enjoy for the very first time live music and drama inside Diwan, the Museum’s restaurant, featuring 19th-century wooden panels hand-carved and painted in Damascus.
