Q&A with Mahmood Ahmed: Outgoing diplomatic representative of Aga Khan Development Network in Uganda

The pioneer diplomatic representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Uganda concluded his tour of duty last month. He spoke on the organisation’s mission, investments and impact in the country.

Summary

  • Mahmood Hussein Ahmed was born in 1955 in Kampala, then moved to England in 1963.
  • He attended Kent College, Canterbury, and went on to study law at Oxford University from 1973-1976, where he was president of the college’s law society in 1975.
  • He received his MBA degree from the European Institute of Business Administration in France in 1978.
  • He has worked for international law firm Clifford Chance, (previously known as Clifford Turner) in London and Paris, and Evans Dodd in London, where he continues to be a partner.
  • His Highness the Aga Khan appointed him as vice president of the Ismaili Council for the UK, serving between 1993 and 1996, then as president from 1996-2002.
  • He was appointed AKDN diplomatic representative in Uganda in 2006.
  • Mahmood Ahmed is married to Shamin, and the couple has two grown up daughters, Safiya and Zabeen.
