The new brand adds another non-traditional company to the Canadian media landscape less than a year after BuzzFeed launched north of the border
Vancity Buzz, Western Canada’s largest online-only publication will rebrand as “Daily Hive” (dailyhive.com) and expand nationally at a time when traditional news outlets struggle with shrinking revenue and layoffs.
The eight-year-old, BuzzFeed-esque site attracts 7.5 million hits a month and is known for pumping out hyper-local content that millennials love to share and journalists love to sneer at. The publication announced Wednesday it will open newsrooms in Toronto and Montreal, bringing its full-time staff up to 25 from only three in 2014.
Daily Hive was chosen as the “home for all the buzz” to avoid the geographic constraints of the site’s original name, editor-in-chief Farhan Mohamed explained.
