Re: “Let’s raise the bar for who we allow to become new Canadians,” Daphne Bramham, Opinion, May 20.
New Canadians expect you to refrain from stereotyping and generalizing when you see us sporting a full-size beard, or when you see our women wearing hijabs. We are not terrorists or radicalized persons. We believe that Canada is a democratic country and no one should dictate to us what we should wear or not wear.
We expect you not to generalize when you see images in the media promoting Islamophobia. New Canadians are proud and take their citizenship seriously and are loyal to the country.
We expect municipal, provincial and federal politicians of all stripes to talk to us all the time, and not woo us only during elections.
