From Simurghs to divs to jade parrots, ‘the fables and legends are quite universal,’ says curator
Have you heard the one about The Tortoise and The Hare? Greek storyteller Aesop served up the 5th century BCE fable as a reminder that slow and steady triumphs — it’s just one example of how arts taps into the animal world in an attempt to teach and reflect upon humanity.Now there’s a unique opportunity to discover the story of the Simurgh (a mythical, rainbow-feathered bird) or that tale of the shape-shifting army of divs (demons) with the new exhibition Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art, which recently opened at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
