Aga Khan Museum Welcomes Turkish Masters

Aga Khan Museum announces concert by Erkan Oğur and Ismail Hakkı Demircioğlu

Toronto, March 7, 2016 – The Aga Khan Museum and Turkuaz TV, Canada’s only Turkish community television program, co-present two exceptional musicians from Turkey: Erkan Oğur, pioneer of the fretless guitar, and Ismail Hakkı Demircioğlu, master of saz and guitar.

Taking place Friday, April 1, 2016 at 8:30 pm (click to purchase tickets) in the Museum’s auditorium, the performance is an exciting complement to the Aga Khan Museum’s current exhibition A City Transformed: Images of Istanbul Then and Now, for which Turkuaz TV is media partner. For those wishing to enhance their experience of Turkish culture, a themed dinner showcasing Turkish cuisine will be offered at Diwan, the Museum’s restaurant headed by master chef Mark McEwan.

For over two decades, Erkan Oğur and Ismail Hakkı Demircioğlu have been interpreting the ancient songs of Anatolia using traditional musical instruments (saz, baglama lute) and modern ones (guitar). They have toured extensively in Turkey and abroad, and collaborated on two albums (Gülün Kokusu Vardı, 1998 and Anadolu Beşik, 2000). Their concert at the Aga Khan Museum will showcase new and previously released music that has its earliest origins in the 14th century.

Tickets for the April 1 performance are available at agakhanmuseum.org and by calling 416.646.4677. Tickets for the pre-show dinner may be added to performance tickets or purchased separately. Gallery hours will be extended for ticket holders, permitting exclusive access to the exhibition A City Transformed: Images of Istanbul Then and Now and Collections gallery before the performance.
