Welcome to Mbarara
My first impression of the town is that it’s obviously larger than Tororo, a welcome relief after two weeks spent in relative boredom and seclusion, though the hospital experience was quite rewarding and it was interesting to realize that the already strapped system became even more barebones as I ventured to smaller districts. I arrive into my new digs for the next month just as a torrential downpour starts. There’s a saying in our language that rain brings good fortune…that or it soaks all your clothes. I am taken on a tour of my home by the house girl – it’s a sprawling one level house with rooms galore – one room is actually located inside another room. I get a large room centrally located between the kitchen the living room and the bathroom. Everything I need in arms reach. I’m informed somewhat apologetically that the toilets have just stopped working, but only just today! I later find out that they have been down for over a week but what can you do?
