Nikki Jamieson for Calgary Herald, April 22, 2015: A 16-year-old student from Calgary [Canada] proved to the world that she has a way with words. So much so, they gave her a trophy for it. Imaan Kherani is a Grade 11 student from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. She won first place in Interpretive Reading at the 2015 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Hong Kong.
“I’m still shocked and honoured, most of all, to have won,” said Kherani. “I think it really showed to me the importance of dedication to your passion and to do the best in all that you do.”
Kherani began by competing against 117 contestants in her category, with the field ultimately narrowed to just 12. The top 2 contestants then had to perform their reading in front of 11 judges and 1,500 spectators.
