Prof. Marina Rustow of Johns Hopkins University is an expert on the Cario Geniza; her book – Heresy and the Politics of Community: The Jews of the Fatimid Caliphate – uses documents from both the Fatimid chancery and the Cairo Geniza to place Jewish sectarian communities of 10-11th century Egypt within their Fatimid contexts. In this spirit, Prof. Rustow will give a brief presentation on the kinds of documents she encounters in her research, and use them to frame some broad methodological questions for discussion.
