KENYA: It stands tall, elegant among other buildings on Nairobi’s Kimathi Street, telling little of its age and heritage. The Industrial Promotion Services ( IPS) building, built between 1965 and 1967, was Nairobi’s tallest building at the time.
It was officially opened by Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta in the presence of the Aga Khan on March 14, 1967. It is 13 storeys tall, with a total lettable space of 66,000 square feet. The IPS building was built by PDM (K) Ltd, a member of the Aga Khan Development Network. Speaking at the time of its inauguration, an IPS spokesperson stated that “this building was a symbol of faith placed in the country’s future by the Ismaili Community”.

Hi: I remember this IPS Building in Nairobi very well. When it was opened, my religion teacher at the AK Primary School in Nairobi made mention of it and gave students a picture of Mowlana Hazar Imam enjoying a view of the city from its top floor. I still have the picture in my kiddie album and you can see the old bus station in the background on which the round Tower style Hilton Hotel was built. In 1973-74, Canada opened its immigration office in the Executive tower (the shorter) wing of this building. Thousands of prospective immigrants to Canada, including many many Ismailis, would have gone to those offices for their immigration application interviews and if successful, eventually collect their visas in person, if they resided in Nairobi. I remember this very well as I was one of them. Zahir Dharsee
