I first heard the voice of Sufi singer Sanam Marvi on season 3 of the television show Coke Studio Pakistan. I didn’t understand a word she was saying, but I was blown away when Sanam Marvi was premiered for the first time on the show. She floored me with the power and intensity of her voice. I was intrigued and wanted to discover the meaning behind her songs. When I researched the translations I discovered that these were not merely songs, but actually the poetry of Sufi saints from Pakistan. As I watched season after season, I would look forward to her songs above all others, partly because they infused Sufiyana kalaam and the creativity in which her voice was harnessed, but mostly because of the voice itself that I could listen to on repeat and find something new and inspiring each time.
