Name a museum in Ontario’s capital city and chances are, you’ll say the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) or the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario).
But there’s a new kid on the block — a $300 million addition to the Toronto cultural scene.
The Aga Khan, the spiritual head of the planet’s 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, has financed and built a new museum and spiritual centre near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East and it’s no exaggeration to say the edifice itself is as visually stunning as any of the art it houses.
“Ask anybody to name a famous European painter from several hundred years ago and most people will say Rembrandt or Reubens,” says Henry Kim, the director of the new Aga Khan Museum. “But they can’t name anyone from the Muslim world, even though there were excellent artists from the same time. We’re going to change that.”
