Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam opens heart surgery laboratory

Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam opens heart surgery laboratoryAga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam is now poised to handle heart related complications thanks to the opening of a new heart treatment laboratory.

The new Catheterisation lab at the renowned private hospital is a state of the art facility that not only reassures Tanzanians of cutting edge cardiac medical services but also saves patients from the expensive trips abroad that they would otherwise have to make.

Commenting at a news conference earlier this week, the Hospital’s Medical Director, Dr Mstaafa Bapumia, said the lab is already operational and patients should seek treatment there.

“We finally have surgical heart treatment in the country, we no longer have to incur the expensive costs travelling abroad,” he said.

According to him, on average, the cost of sending a patient to India for angioplasty (widening narrowed or obstructed arteries) may reach or exceed 3500 USD, amount very high for most Tanzanians.

“But thanks to this new facility, the same treatment can be obtained here for only 1500 US dollars, that is almost half the price,” the Aga Khan Medical Director reassured patients.
